A very real and sad reality of rock is that we seem to no longer produce great rock & roll legends. But last night at Better Than Fred's I had a moment in time I'll honestly never forget.
Within minutes of the little-know opening act THE LAZYS there was an undeniable (and almost stunned affect) over the entire crowd.
This is no exaggeration in saying that THE LAZYS will be the talk of this city for years to come, and a real tough act to follow for any other bands. If you missed this show, please just kick yourself right now. Trust me. You should kick yourself.
More often than not, an opener pales in comparison to the bigger name they're touring with. Not so with THE LAZYS. I felt before the end of their very first verse, that I could actually be witnessing something unbelievable and maybe even historic in the making.
After 3 songs of over-the-top psychotic energy, I prepared myself for the inevitable upcoming ballad.
We all know the drill. It's when the band starts off their show with crazy-ass showmanship & energy then it all fizzles away about 3 songs in---for a B side ballad---then they ride that roller coaster throughout the night.
After all, a band or artist without super-human abilities can't possibly sustain themselves at a 10 the entire night. The real mind blower here, was these Aussie bad boys didn't stop for a second throughout their ENTIRE SHOW. Seriously? These guys actually call themselves THE LAZYS??? That's hilarious.
Here was the other stunner. Most times a band (even of mediocre talent) would have a packed dance floor so deep you couldn't cross it at this place. But this was weird! The screaming crowd in this sold out venue was THROUGH THE ROOF FOR THESE GUYS... but its like we were all so shocked at the ROCK CIRCUS in front of us, we were afraid to miss even a SECOND OF THEIR CHAOS! To go hit the dance floor almost felt disrespectful as a witness to this show.
I could write a small novel about how blown away I am about THE LAZYS. Off stage: truly nice guys that went out of their way to show their appreciation & meet with their new fans. On stage: incredible musicianship, impeccable vocal harmonies & their all original set was SO AMAZING, that I couldn't wait to get home and search out iTunes for their album.
It's not enough to say "don't miss seeing this band". I truly pray these guys can survive all the traps and struggles of a touring rock band, because what I witnessed last night, says we could actually be seeing the imminent birth of a potential 'rock group legend in the making'. Only time will really tell us.
I for one, will be watching every tour announcement and will readily fly to another city or province to see these guys again. Wow. What a band.
